Bilbao may host the European Spallation Neutron Source (ESS), a project to design and construct a next generation facility for research with neutrons.

According to Basque Government sources, the agreement, which is to be finally closed, defines a single infrastructure with two locations: a general one in Lund (Sweden), and another one in Bilbao. It would host facilities for design and manufacture of accelerators, a testing laboratory and a remote access station so that the researchers can conduct experiments from the Basque city.

Bilbao headquarters'' works would begin immediately, while Lund''s ones are said to begin in 2011.
