Kepa Álvarez''s passion for surfing is reflected in his movies. According to Euskosare.org, his love for ploughing the waves was a key factor for him to start making, first his own surfboard, later his own short films.

He began videotaping and taking pictures of the process of turning a piece of wood into a long, narrow, somewhat rounded boards, usually having one or two fins, used for surfing. After the footage was post produced by Álvarez, a young fireman from Donostia-San Sebastián who added txalaparta and didgeridoo sounds to the movie, a short film entitled Madera was born.

Nowadays, the Basque surfer''s audiovisual work has received numerous awards (Saint-Jean de Luz/Donibane-Lohitzune and Donostia-San Sebastián International film festivals were witnesses of its success) and the reviews on it have been very favourable.

Madera''s next appointment is taking place in Manhattan, at New York Surf Film Festival from September 25 to 27.

Kepa Álvarez is also very keen on arts. Apart from the championships in which the surfer from Gipuzkoa has reached outstanding classifications, he counts on several pieces of art, especially paintings, among his creations.
