The Spanish and Basque Departments of Traffic signed an agreement on Monday to share information about traffic in an aim to improve both traffic management and citizens'' traffic information services.

The pact means that now Basques will not have to call two numbers to receive information about the state of the traffic (one for Basque and another for Spanish traffic) and victims of fatal crashes which take place on Basque highways will now be added to the national statistics.

Both Home Office minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and Basque Interior Councillor Rodolfo Ares, speaking during a press conference, said that the previous situation of not sharing statistics was "absurd".

The administrations will now share information regarding the state of the roads, accidents and studies regarding highway security. They will also collaborate on car and road safety campaigns. Rubalcaba pointed out that in the last year, there had been in 12% in fatal road accidents in the Spanish State.
