Basque company CAF to supply tube, tram units to Istanbul, Belgrade

Belgrado's tram units will be similar to those working in Bilbao, Vitoria and Houston. The enterprise from Gipuzkoa has 3 years to deliver the streetcars. Meanwhile, Istanbul waits for 30 metro units.

Basque company CAF on Tuesday signed a contract to supply of 30 tram units to the Serbian capital, Belgrade, which implies an amount of 70 million euros. According to the enterprise, the tram for Belgrade is a project of great strategic importance given that it involves the Gipuzkoa''s entry in Eastern Europe, an environment described as "highly competitive".

Moreover, CAF has signed a contract to supply other 30 metro units, this time for the Turkish city of Istanbul. The operation amounts to 139 million euros.

These metro units are fitted with 4 doors on each side of the cars, 1500 Vdc catenary pantograph energy pick-up, and state of the art passenger information, video-entertainment and CCTV surveillance system technology. These new units shall be incorporated on the new Istanbul, Kadiko and Kartal line, in the Asian side of the city.

Separately, the Basque company Bombardier Trapaga signed an agreement with the Italian Railways which involved the supply of the motorization systems for 150 train units.
