Basque retail trade sector sales fell 4.5% in 3rd quarter of 2009

Non-specialised retail trade sector sales posted a year-on-year decrease of 6.6% and specialised sales fell by 2.9%.

The retail trade sector of Basque Country posted a 4.5% decrease in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2009 with respect to the same period of the previous year, in standardised terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared with the previous quarter, domestic retail trade sales, once the seasonal effect has been discounted, was down by 0.4% in nominal terms.

In real terms, once the price effect had been discounted, retail trade sector sales registered a year-on-year decrease of 4.3%. With respect to the previous quarter, retail trade sales fell by 0.7% in constant values.

Specialised retail trade decreased its nominal sales by 2.9% in the third quarter of 2009, with respect to the same period in 2008, while non-specialised retail trade registered a fall of 6.6%.

In real terms, specialised retail trade registered a 3.3% drop and non-specialised retail trade was down by 7.0%.

Specialised retail trade saw the greatest year-on-year decrease in the Food Sector, which registered a 9.4% fall in nominal terms The Personal Equipment sector also recorded a 5.9% fall in nominal terms and sales of Household Equipment were down by 0.6%. On the other hand, specialised Other Consumer Goods sales registered a nominal increase of 1.2%.

In constant terms, the Food Sector was also the sector that registered the greatest year-on-year fall (-9.7%). The sales of Personal Equipment fell by 3.5% and the Household Equipment sector was down by 2.1%. Finally, specialised Other Consumer Goods fell by 0.1%, also in real terms.

Non-specialised retail trade with a predominance of food products grew by 6.8% in nominal terms. With regards to non-specialised retail trade with a predominance of other products, there was a 5.1% fall in nominal terms.

In constant euros, the drop in non-specialised retail trade sales with a predominance of food products came to 7.3% compared to the previous year. With regard to non-specialised retail trade with a predominance of other products, there was a 5.3% fall in real terms.

By provinces, retail domestic trade of Alava fell by 6.7% in nominal terms in the third quarter of 2009, with respect to the same quarter of the previous year. Sales in Biscay fell by 6.1% in nominal terms and by 1.1% in Gipuzkoa.

With respect to the previous quarter, once the seasonal effect has been discounted, retail domestic trade in Gipuzkoa was up by 1.0%, it fell by 0.9% in Biscay and was down by 1.3% in Álava, in nominal terms.

In constant values, Álava registered a drop of 7.1% with respect to the previous year, Biscay fell by 5.8% and Gipuzkoa was down by 0.9% on the previous year. With respect to the previous quarter, and in constant euros, sales in Álava and Biscay decreased by 1.5% and 1.0% respectively, and were up in Gipuzkoa by 0.3%.

Employment in the retail trade sector rose by 0.4% in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the previous quarter. It was up by 1.2% in Gipuzkoa, 0.4% in Álava and fell by 0.,1% in Biscay.
