Spallation Neutron Source substation will be located in Leioa

On December 9th, the Basque president and the Minister of Science and Innovation will lay the first stone of the project in the Science Park of the University of the Basque Country.

The board of the Bilbao''s subsidiary headquarters of the European Spallation Neutron Source (ESS) on Tuesday approved the location of the station in the Science Park of the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) in Leioa, Biscay.

As the Ministry of Science and Innovation said in a statement, on December 9th Lehendakari, or Basque PM Patxi López and Minister of Science and Innovation Cristina Garmendia will lay the first stone of this project.

The board also approved the rules for the future running of the sub-site and the science plan to guide a project that is being developed by researcher Javier Bermejo, who shall be its director.

180 millions

The development of the Biscay''s Spallation Neutron Source involves, as the Ministry reminded, an investment of 180 million euros that will bring a "rapid and positive effect in the economy of the area."

Its main activity "in the short term" will be the research, development, and design of the technologies to be installed at the main centre of the ESS, located in the Swedish city of Lund.

The Secretary of State for Research, Carlos Martinez, will be in charge of the presidency of the board, which will rotate. Basque Councillor for Education, Universities and Research, Isabel Celaa, will be the vice president.
