Four trains have collided in two separate accidents caused by dense winter fog in northern India, killing 10 people and injuring about 47 others.

Senior police official Brij Lal says the first accident happened near Etawah southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, when a train entering a station rammed another. Ten people, including the driver of one of the trains, were injured.

A second accident occurred near Kanpur southwest of Lucknow, killing 10 people and injuring 37 others, some seriously.

Railway official N.K. Srivastava said the accidents were due to dense fog and that both trains were traveling at low speeds.

Fog, which is a usual winter occurrence across northern India, has disrupted railway schedules across Uttar Pradesh, Srivastava added.
