In the Basque Country, 200 transplant operations take place every year placing it at the top of the table internationally in terms of organ transplants with a rate of 38 donations per one million inhabitants.

Kidney, liver, lung and heart transplants are the most common.

In addition to these figures, the number of families now choosing to opt out of organ donation has also dropped: A decade ago, 30% refused to donate their dead relatives organs while in the past year, this figure has dropped to 10%, well below the European average.

It has been concluded that the work carried out by Basque hospitals in the area of donation is so remarkable they have been chosen to develop a book outlining good practice for encouraging organ donors.
