Basque parliament will use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to broadcast its activity and to boost an approach to citizenship, as president of the chamber Arantza Quiroga said on Thursday.

Quiroga described the first network and "paperless meeting" of the parliament as "positive." Forthcoming activities include an electronic parliamentary office so that the members of the Basque parliament can make arrangements and consultations through their mobile phones.

Quiroga also said that it was necessary to count on the "commitment of the parliamentarians" to keep the chamber''s activity updated. "Otherwise, it doesn''t make much sense to get involved in this," she added.

During Thursday''s meeting, parliamentarians just availed themselves of their computers to work, without using printed documents. They processed 360 issues.
