A Chinese writers'' group says Google Inc. has apologized for its "poor communication'''' with Chinese authors about scanning their books into its online library, leading to a copyright dispute.

The Chinese Writers'' Association said Sunday that it received a letter from the U.S. search giant, acknowledging that the book scanning had aroused dissatisfaction among writers in China.

In the statement addressed to the writers'' association and apparently signed by Erik Hartmann, Asia-Pacific head of Google Books, Google said it plans to work out a settlement proposal with Chinese writers by March and reach a formal agreement by June.

Google''s ambitious effort to make printed works available online has faced opposition from writers in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
