Since February 13th onwards, the US sculptor Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is the artist to inaugurate the first temporary exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2010.

Rauschenberg had the skills to find new and often improved uses for what others threw away. Gluts (1986-95) is the perfect example of this. The exhibition compiles different objects such as traffic signs, exhaust pipes, blinds or radiator grillers to create new and original items. According to Rauschenberg, the economic crisis in his home state Texas inspired his work.

The North American (1925-2008) had the ability to find new and often improved uses for what others tossed aside, reinvigorating detritus with a revealing second life. In Gluts (1986-95), his last sculpture series, the artist assembled metal objects such as traffic signs, exhaust pipes, radiator grilles or blinds to create complete units in which the whole becomes more than the sum of the parts.

This is the second retrospective that the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum dedicates to the artist. It will be running until September 12th.
