Basque triathlete Virginia Berasategui (who came third in the 2009 Ironman competition in Hawaii) was hit by a car while training on the Balearic island of Mallorca on Monday.

Berasategui was in the middle of an on-road cycling training session when a driver coming from the opposite direction swerved onto her lane and hit her. She suffered cuts and contusions to her face, while her helmet was completely crushed and three teeth knocked out. Her head also hit the windscreen of the on-coming car as it drove off. Virginia and her team are currently awaiting the results of a scan.
