The Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastian will be the European capital for Ocean Initiatives 2010, an annual event convened by Surfrider Foundation to raise awareness, mobilize the citizens and alert the media to make people aware of the problem of macro-waste.

''Waves of Citizen Energy'' is the central idea of the 2016 candidature of Donostia-San Sebastian as European Capital of Culture 2016.

"Ocean Initiatives", the largest eco-friendly weekend in Europe, will be held simultaneously in cities around the world on the 18, 19, 20 and 21 March, when Donostia-San Sebastián will be the European center for the whole campaign.

Over 40 associations and individuals will help with designing, organizing and developing the event.

The event is open to all (general public, schoolchildren, companies, etc.) and aims at bringing the impact of marine and seashore waste to the attention of the elected representatives, the authorities and the companies.

Surfrider Foundation Europe

Surfrider Foundation Europe has now been fighting for the preservation and the improvement of the European heritage coastlines and the protection of the population that benefit from these for 20 years. Their awareness-raising initiatives are aimed at alerting public opinion to the fragility of the coastlines, and to acquaint the general public with the notion of eco-citizenship.

One of the main struggles led by their organisation has been the fight against macro-waste, which is solid waste stemming from human consumption that is visible to the naked eye, found abandoned along the coasts.
