In 1610, 31 neighbours from the Navarre town of Zugarramurdi were accused of witchcraft and tried in Logroño. The Spanish Inquisition sent eleven of them to die burned at the stake, carrying out the execution in the capital of La Rioja.

Four centuries later, the city of Logroño has chosen the anniversary of such an absurd event to remember those victims and honour them in order to apologise for the atrocities committed by the rulers of that time. Representatives from Zugarramurdi have been present at the time of setting up a sign honouring the eleven people killed in the process. Furthermore, eleven elms, one for each person executed, will be planted at the city''s Parque del Ebro.

Both Logroño and Zugarramurdi will organize more events to honour the victims throughout the year.

In the western Pyrenees, past Baztan and just a short distance from the French border, lies Zugarramurdi, a village known because of a past related to witches.
