Donostia-San Sebastian hosts "Global Oceans Initiative"

The programme organized by the Surfrider Foundation will include more than 40 activities and has been included in acts for the city's candidacy as 2016 Cultural Capital.

From Thursday 18th until Sunday 21st March, Donostia-San Sebastian will become the European capital of the "Oceans Initiatives" programme, organized every year by the Surfrider Foundation and for the 2010 edition is set to include more than 40 activities associated with the protection of marine life.

Numerous environmental bodies, hundreds of school children from around Guipúzcoa and the French Basque Country, as well as various well-known faces will participate in the event, which hopes to massively motivate citizens on both sides of the border to take part in environmental action and enlightening sports and musical activities designed to raise awareness about the importance of sustaining the oceans.

The programme, which is included in the list of events in the San Sebastian''s candidacy as Cultural Capital for 2016, was presented on Wednesday at the city''s Aquarium by mayor, Odón Elorza, Vice-president of the General Council for the Atlantic Pyrenees, Jean Jacques Lasserre, and the President of the Surfrider Foundation Europe, Gilles Asenjo.

Three human chains will top off proceedings at this year''s edtion of "Oceans Initiatives" which will be formed by joining people together with fishing nets on each one of San Sebastian''s beaches.
