The Basque Government is to approve its own set of measures for cutting the deficit and generating employment, aside from those state measures which will be compulsorily imposed in the Community.

Basque Government spokeswoman, Idoia Mendia, explained that in addition to measures being taken by the central administration to cut the deficit, the Basque executive would be prepared to lend a hand by approving a set of saving and regulating measures with a double objective: "reducing arrears and creating employment".

"Euskadi cannot remain remain at the margin of common efforts to reduce the deficit," added Mendia, who assured that President of the Basque Country Patxi López would announce which specific measures were to be taken.

The Deputy General of Alava, Xavier Agirre of the Basque Nationalist Party, meanwhile indicated that some of the measures announced by Zapatero were not transferable to Euskadi, due to the Autonomous Community''s "better economic situation". Agirre did recognize that it would be necessary to adopt certain measures, though he described some of those taken by central government as "hard and unjust".
