The three beaches of Biscay town Getxo, Azkorri-Gorrondatxe, Areaga and Arrigunaga, will officially be the only Basque beaches where the blue flag will fly this summer.

The Blue Flag works is awarded according to pre-established standards which cover water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.

The Councilor for Environment for Getxo, Keltse Eiguren, has expressed her satisfaction with the three prize received this year.

In 2010, a total of 605 flags have been awarded throughout Spain: 521 to beaches and 84 to sports arenas. The beach at Azkorri in Getxo received its first ever blue flag in 1992 since which time it has been awarded on 16 further occasions. It lost its blue-flag status for just one year owing to the Prestige oil spill.

On the Ereaga beach the flag flew in 2006 and 2007, while on Arrigunaga on just one previous summer in 2007, the first time all three beaches received the prize.
