Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams urged the Spanish government "to grasp the opportunity presented by the significant move", referring to an announcement by the armed Basque group ETA to no longer employ offensive armed actions.

Commenting after the announcement of the ceasefire, Gerry Adams welcomed the announcement made by ETA "to pursue Basque independence through peaceful and democratic means".
