Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 1.1% in July 2010

According to the Basque Country Statistics Office Eustat, sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 4.5% and other products were up by 0.5%.

Sales in the large stores of the Basque Country registered in July 2010 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 1.1% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of product products at large stores fell by a nominal year-on-year 4.5%, while the rest of the items rose by 0.5%.

By provinces, the only nominal increase of sales in the year-on-year comparison was in Gipuzkoa, where they were up by 3.3%. Sales were down by 3.4% in Bizkaia and by 1.2% in Álava.

With respect to the previous month, June 2010, sales for the Basque Country overall fell by 2.7% in nominal terms: Food sales fell by 1.4% on the previous month, while the other products were down by 3.3%. Álava and Bizkaia registered downturns of 0.8% and 4.8%, respectively, in their sales in nominal terms. However, sales in Gipuzkoa were up by 0.5%.

In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 2.8% year-on-year decrease and a 3.0% downturn on the previous month.

Compared to July 2009, sales of food products fell by 5.3%, while other products were down by 1.7% in constant euros. The performance of the provinces showed a downturn in Álava and Bizkaia, where sales fell by 2.9% and 5.1%, respectively, in constant terms, while they rose by 1.8% in Gipuzkoa.

Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, fell by 1.5% compared to June 2010 and the other products were down by 3.7%.

By provinces, there was a 1.2% decrease in Álava, Bizkaia fell by 5.2%, in real terms, while there was a 0.4% upturn in Gipuzkoa.

The number of people employed in large stores fell by 0.1% in July 2010 with respect to June, once adjusted for seasonal effects. Álava and Bizkaia recorded a negative variation, down by 1.0% and 0.6%, respectively, while the number rose in Gipuzkoa by 1.4%.
