Basque PM Patxi Lopez welcomed an statement by the armed group ETA saying it is ending its 43-year armed campaign and said "the Basques have fulfilled their dream today".

During an official trip in the United States, the Basque Premier also said that ETA's decision "confirms its defeat because it reaches its end without having achieved any of its objectives".

Patxi Lopez stressed that peace was achieved "thanks to the resistance of thousands of Basque citizens that have refused to give up their own freedom", thanks to "the strength of the State of Law, justice and police action and zero tolerance to the totalitarian positions that justify violence".

"The Basques have suffered, have resisted grinding their teeth but have never given up and have stood up and fought to fulfill their dream of freedom. And today, their dream has come true", Patxi Lopez added.
