President of the Basque Country Patxi Lopez believes "it's time to bring prisoners to prisons near their homes in the Basque Country". "The moment has come," he said in an interview with Basque newspaper El Correo.

Lopez said he would like to discuss issues such as "bringing prisoners closer" to home with Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy, leader of the Popular Party (PP), who would form the next Spanish government following the PP's crushing election victory last weekend. Lopez is convinced that the new head of the Spanish government will "push toward peace."

He also referred to the outlawed party Sortu and expresses his confidence that the courts will declare the left-wing formation legal and "as such, it will enter the political arena."

He also discarded an electoral breakthrough because he considered it "irresponsible at a time which we must deal with the crisis and establish freedom and coexistence. Euskadi is not prepared for a third election campaign in less than a year," he underlined.
