The pro-independence group say they have not ruled out forming a pact with Navarrese nationalist group Geroa Bai, though the PP has already forewarned they will not permit this.

Amaiur’s parliamentary representative Xabier Mikel Errokondo admitted on Friday that, following the PP’s decision to reject their request to form their own parliamentary group, they were studying the possibility of forming pacts with other political groups such as Geroa Bai.

Although, according to Errokondo, Amaiur are certain that any request to form a pact would be rejected by the PP, it would enable them to fulfill the requirements for achieving parliamentary representation.

He also signalled that they would “definitely” appeal the decision of the parliamentary committee at the Constitutional Court over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the vice-president of the parliamentary committee, the PP’s Celia Villalobos, confirmed that they would not allow any pact between the nationalist parties to go ahead.

Basque President describes ruling as “clumsy”

Basque President, Patxi López, described the decision to refuse Amaiur the right to their own parliamentary representation as “political clumsiness” which would add fuel to the victim mentality of the nationalist left.

Speaking during a plenary session at the Basque parliament on Friday, López said that “part of the (Basque) community has decided that their representation is in Amaiur, something that cannot be put under question by constantly attacking this reality and not allowing them their own group.”

In López’s view, since ETA announced they were calling an end to their armed struggle, it was time to move forward in recognition of the new situation and, in order to do so, believes it would be “a good idea to allow into the democratic system those who have been out of it for so many years.”
