The bridges, seven in total, were judged according to two categories: creativity and resilience.

Countless hours and many thousands of small wooden sticks went in to building the seven scale model bridges presented at the eleventh annual competition of bridges built entirely with ice-lolly sticks, organised by the Engineering School of Bilbao.

The entrants, all students of engineering, worked over a number of weeks to construct their bridges with nothing more than (thousands of) ice-lolly sticks, glue.

The most resilient bridge was a Roman compression arch, built by Bilbao Engineering School student Pablo Cearra. It managed to withstand a total weight of 909 kilos in floor tiles before collapsing.

First prize in the artistic category went to Roberto Polvoroso, whose construction endured a weight of 424 kilos before giving way.
