Maialen Chourraut won bronze in the final of the K1 whitewater slalom in the London Olympics on Thursday, the first medal won by a Basque member of the Spanish team.

Chourraut finished third after gold medal winner Emilie Fer and Australia’s Jessica Fox, who took silver.

The canoeist, of Atlético San Sebastián, took 106,87 seconds to complete the descent at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in North London.

Gipuzkoan-born Chourraut made a small error at the start of her descent, which prevented her from attaining a higher accolade.
