The Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao on Wednesday announced its twenty-seventh guest piece: Édouard Manet''s (Paris, 1832-1883) "The cherry picker". Despite the composition is simple, it is a great example of the expressiveness of the painter, a key figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.&' || 'nbsp;

"The cherry picker" hides the tragic fate of the model. Alexandre was a humble boy who worked for Manet cleaning his brushes and posing for him. He committed suicide when he was only 15 years old in the atelier of the painter on Lavoisier Street. Deeply affected by the death of his assistant, Manet completed the composition at his workshop of the street de la Victoire, where he moved after the incident.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao presents the portrait as part of its guest work program, which strated in 2001 and has shown other works of art such as Martín Rico''s "Palacio de los Dux de Venecia", Artemisia Gentileschi''s Judith and Holofernes" and Agostino Doria''s "Portrait of a Gentleman."

The painting has been provided by the Gulbekian Foundation.
