European Film Week opens with 'Metropolis'

The event will commemorate 'Europe Day' and will be presided over by Basque Premier Patxi Lopez and Minister of Science and Innovation Cristina Garmendia.

Just a day before of Europe Day, Teatro Principal in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) hosts the national premiere of Fritz Lang''s Metropolis.

Teatro Principal in Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts today May 8th the national premiere of the full version of the film Metropolis. The opening ceremony will take place at 19,00 and the screening of the film will be accompanied by Bilbao Philharmonia Orchestra.

Filmed at Berlin''s Babelsberg studios, Fritz Lang''s Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere. The original 16mm version was found last year at the film museum Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires and painstakingly restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation, a Wiesbaden-based film preservation institute.

The new footage has been restored as best as it can be and the film is being shown in a form as close as possible to the way Fritz Lang originally intended.

The event is organized by the Department of Culture of the Basque Government will commemorate Europe Day and will be presided over by Basque Premier Patxi Lopez and Minister of Science and Innovation Cristina Garmendia. Culture councillor Blanca Urgell and the President of the Spanish Cinema Academy, Alex de la Iglesia, will also attend the event, among others.
