The Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre opens on Saturday the 71st edition of Donostia Musical Fortnight.

On the opening day, Landarbaso Abesbatza recently awarded two gold medals and one silver at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing (China), will feature music by composers of the twentieth century, as Vytautas Miskinis, Ko Matsushita, Xabier Sarasola or Albert Alcaraz, under the direction of Iñaki Tolaretxipi, founding conductor of the choir. The concert will take place in the wonderful Plenary Hall of the City Council of Donosti.

The Quincena celebrates several anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of the wedding of King Louis XIV of France and Navarre and Maria Teresa of Austria, which took place in San Juan de Luz, and the four composers, Mahler, Chopin, Schumann and Wolf.

However, the main reason for this release is the music and Russian interpreters, coinciding with the creation of The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky, one hundred years ago.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Toulouse, the Orfeon Donostiarra, the Choir of the Smolny Cathedral, Loinatz Abesbatza, Koro Saenz, Conductus Ensemble, Coro Easo, NovaLux Ensemble, Alia Mvsica, among others, and also, prestigious conductors and performers like Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Ponkin, Andres Orozco-Estrada, Tugan Sokhlev, Vladimir Blegetso will meet in one of the most important musical cycles of the current scene.

In addition, there will be the world premiere of the Mass Pope John XXIII (Ecumenical Mass) for choir and organ about the Basque composer Tomas Garbizu, written in 1962 and presented now by Koro Saenz and Loinatz Abesbatza.
