Spain''s Foreign Ministry says two Spanish citizens were injured in the disputed territory of Western Sahara after being involved in a sit-down protest there.

The ministry said 14 Spanish nationals had been taking part in a protest in solidarity with local Saharawi communities when the 11 were taken for questioning by Moroccan police.

Two of those questioned were later taken to hospital by the police, the spokeswoman said Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry rules.

Morocco and Mauritania split Western Sahara between them when Spanish colonizers left there in 1975. Morocco took control in 1979, but the Polisario Front rebel group seeks independence for the territory.
