French officer killed

'France has paid a high price for its help against ETA' - Zapatero

The Spanish PM said he would speak Wednesday to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and expressed his condolences to the family of the slain officer.

Spain''s prime minister is blaming the armed Basque group ETA for the shooting death of a French policeman outside Paris.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero says "France has paid a high price for its help against ETA." He spoke Wednesday at an impromptu news conference he called specifically to condemn the shooting Tuesday evening in the Paris suburb of Dammarie-les-Lys.

Zapatero said he would speak Wednesday to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and expressed his condolences to the family of the slain officer.
