In a meeting of the Executive planned for next Tuesday August 21st, the Basque Government will assess the appropriate measures to avoid imposing the austerity cuts ordered by the central government to the areas of health and education, Interior Minister Rodolfo Ares confirmed on Thursday.

During an interview with Radio Euskadi, Ares gave his pledge to “Basque society” that they “could rest assured that, as long as the socialist Government exists and the Basque President is socialist there will be no cuts to the areas of Health or Education, or to social policy.”

Ares went on to promise that “(Basque) citizens will not have to pay for medication, particularly the unemployed, the retired or those drawing a pension. We will continue to analyze and introduce ways and measures so that these cuts do not apply in Euskadi.”
