When night falls, a festival of lights creates a luminous profile of the Iberian Peninsula that can be seen from Space. Scientists working at the Earth Observatory of NASA, responsible for the above photo, have dubbed this image ‘the Iberian Peninsula by night’.

As stated by NASA on their official website, they are committed to disclosing images like this one to the public. As well as photos, they share stories and various discoveries about the climate and environment made by the international space agency during the course of their investigations.

In the above image, the observer can clearly make out the cities of Lisbon (the capital of Portugal) the Spanish capital Madrid and the Andalusian city of Seville, due to the immense amount of street lighting. The rest of the peninsula is peppered with frequent but less intense light.

This photo was taken this 4th December from NASA’s International Space Station.
