Work on the new San Mames stadium will begin "at the end of April or the beginning of May," according to the president of Athletic Bilbao, Fernando García Macua. The club will apply for the necessary planning permission from the Council of Bilbao this Wednesday or Thursday in order to lay the first stone.

The Board of Directors for the new stadium - known as San Mames Barria - has decided to put the first phase of construction out to tender. The only thing that as yet remains unknown is whether the Basque Government will participate in the new stadium.

At 8pm, Macua will once again appear before media alongside club coach Joaquin Caparrós. Caparrós agreed on Tuesday to stay on at the club for another season.
