Basque Country''s David Lopez took a solo win in the mountainous ninth stage of the Tour of Spain cycle race on Sunday.

Second behind the Caisse d''Epargne rider was Czech Roman Kreuziger, some six seconds back, while Italy''s Giampaolo Caruso was third.

On a stage with seven classified climbs, Lopez pulled away from a breakaway group of 10 riders with six kilometres to go.

Euskaltel-Euskadi rider Igor Anton finished in the same time as Joaquim Rodriguez to keep the leader''s red jersey.

The Tour of Spain ends on Sept. 19 in Madrid.
