Only 3 online media channels in the world got gold and eitb.com was one of them. Marca.com was also awarded a medal, while NYtimes.com got 3.
The Multimedia Infographics on Climate Change was regarded as one of the 5 best online works by an international jury composed of professionals from the United States, Europe and South America. 1320 works belonging to 140 media groups from 30 countries aspired to get a prize. The Malofiej medal is the largest award received by eitb.com in its 10 years of existence.
There were 13 gold medals concerning press. The New York Times was the main protagonist due to the great Peter Sullivan award, which went to its internet channel and also to the newspaper print edition thanks to a weekly multimedia essay on the most successful films from 1986 to 2008.
Other Basque media groups awarded were the Department of Education of the Basque Government website, hiru.com, which got silver thanks to a work on Basque rural sports, and consumer.es, which was awarded 3 bronze medals for different essays on construction and photoepilation.
4th prize for eitb.com's Multimedia Special Issue
This is the fourth award for eitb.com's Multimedia Special Issue on Climate Change after also receiving the Tecnalia Journalism and ÑH prizes in 2009, and SND Award in 2008.
The Special Multimedia Issue contains infographics, virtual tours around the Sahara desert and Perito Moreno glacier, 3D animations and a calculator of the impact of human activity on the environment. It is available in Basque, Spanish, English and French.
The Malofiej prizes, considered the infographics equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes, take their name from the Argentine journalist Alexander Malofiej, a pioneer who developed his work at the forefront of the emerging global graphics movement in the newspaper La Opinión of Buenos Aires during the 1960s and '70s. Organised by the Spanish office of the SND - Society for News Design - they have been held at the Communication Faculty of the University of Navarre (Iruña-Pamplona) for 17 years.
