Adele steals the show with six wins on Whitney Houston's night

Soul singer Adele won every category in which she was nominated including album of the year for "21" and best record with "Rolling In the Deep."
Soul singer Adele triumphed in her return to music's stage on Sunday, scooping up six Grammys and winning every category in which she was nominated including album of the year for "21" and best record with "Rolling In the Deep."

As joyous as the show was for Adele, it was equally as serious with tributes to late pop star Whitney Houston, who died suddenly on Saturday. She was remembered by fellow artists in acceptance speeches and songs. Jennifer Hudson sang Houston's signature hit, "I Will Always Love You," and Grammy host LL Cool J offered a prayer for Houston's family, friends and fans.

But it was Adele who stole the show. The 23-year-old, who has taken the music world by storm, underwent surgery on her vocal cords late last year and had been resting her voice on doctor's orders until music's biggest night. For the first time since then, the British singer took the stage to belt out "Rolling In the Deep" and finished to a standing ovation.

Adele claimed three of the music industry's top awards - album, record and song of the year - and added best pop solo performance, pop vocal and short video to her stack of trophies.

Tearing up and having difficulty speaking as she took the stage to claim the night's top award, album of the year, Adele talked about "21" and its heartfelt songs dreamed up after a failed love affair.

"This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it, just a rubbish relationship, and it's gone on to do things I can't tell you how I feel about it, it's been the most life-changing year."

Indeed, her sophomore album has sold more than 6.3 million copies in the United States and broken many sales records, including spending 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. Now it can add the Grammys to its many accolades.

Rockers Foo Fighters were the other big winners, picking up five Grammys including best rock performance for the hit "Walk." "This is a great honor because this record was a special record for our band. Rather than go to the best studio ... we made this one in my garage with some microphones and a tape machine," said frontman Dave Grohl. "It shows that the human element of making music is what's most important."

But as jubilant as the audience was for Adele and as much as Foo Fighters rocked the house, Grammy organizers were equally as serious about Houston, whose body was found in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room. The cause is still unknown.

Host LL Cool J took the stage and offered a prayer for Houston, her fans and her family. "Although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed by her musical spirit," he said.

Many winners, remembering Whitney

Grammy organizers give out awards in more than 75 categories and many early winners mentioned Houston. Singer Melanie Fiona, who won with Cee Lo Green for traditional R&B performance for "Fool For You," said she was inspired by the singer.

"Whitney Houston, I would not be standing up here if not for you," Fiona said. Backstage, she told reporters her mother had rocked her in the cradle to Houston's songs when she was a baby.

Other major Grammy winners included country's Taylor Swift, who picked up Grammys for solo performance and country song with "Mean," which she performed to a standing ovation. She had been expected to take best country album, too, but Lady Antebellum swooped in and took that prize with "Own the Night."

The other big surprise came when indie folk band Bon Iver took the Grammy for best new artist over rapper Nicki Minaj, who had been widely expected to win behind hit album "Pink Friday."

DJ Skrillex won two Grammys for best dance recording and top dance/electronica album with "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." Jay-Z and Kanye West won best rap performance with their song "Otis" from the album "Watch the Throne," but they failed to show up to claim their prize. Chris Brown won the Grammy for best R&B album "F.A.M.E."

West entered the night with seven nominations, more than any other artist, but came away with the Grammy for "Otis" and another for best rap album with "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."

Rousing performances were given by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Chris Brown, Coldplay and Rihanna, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson. Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt sang a duet of "A Sunday Kind of Love" from Etta James, who also died in 2012.

Minaj gave fans an over-the-top performance toward the show's final act, and Sir Paul McCartney ended in a guitar-heavy number with Springsteen, Grohl and others. Memorable moments came in a reunion of members of the Beach Boys and a lifetime
award for Glen Campbell, who sang "Rhinestone Cowboy."

<img alt="Soul singer Adele.
Antony, Bobby McFerrin first stars confirmed for 47th Jazz Festival

Jamaican Legends, Ray Gelato, Yellowjackets, Marc Ribot, Ninety Miles and Peter Evans are also on the line up.
A first look at the program of the 47th Heineken Jazz Festival, to be held in San Sebastian between the 19th and the 23rd of July 2012, includes names such as Antony, Bobby McFerrin, Jamaican Legends (Sly & Robbie, Monty Alexander and Ernest Ranglin), Yellowjackets, Ray Gelato, Marc Ribot, Ninety Miles (Stefon Harris, David Sanchez and Nicholas Payton) and Peter Evans.

Antony puts together a unique voice and a fascinating personality. His intimate music is sometimes close to jazz and blues, but his style really is as puzzling as his person. His performance in San Sebastian will be really exceptional, because there will be a large orchestra of about 40 musicians: the Basque orchestra Et Incarnatus, that has found its outstanding position among other bands due to the recognized expertise of its members and its adaptation to a varied repertoire ranging from classical music to collaborations with pop groups and rock.

With this wonderful support, Antony will offer an attractive show titled Cut The World, consisting of songs from his four previous albums with symphonic arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose and Maxim Moston.

Bobby McFerrin is the most popular jazz singer in the world. McFerrin is an inimitable artist, an acrobat with his voice and a great communicator, making an entire auditorium sing with his vocal chords as his only instrument. McFerrin’s concerts are a guarantee of fun and are at the same time exquisite, something that you do not always find. His extraordinary debut in San Sebastian’s Plaza de la Trinidad in 2001 is still remembered by the fans.

He now returns with an impressive project together with Yellowjackets, one of the most enduring and influential bands in modern jazz. They have won a Grammy in no less than thirteen times.

Jamaican Legends is a must for lovers of jazz and reggae, with the participation of the true legends of Jamaican music: Sly & Robbie, Monty Alexander and Ernest Ranglin.

<img alt="Antony and the Johnsons.
Joan Miro's 'Painting-Poem' goes for 16.8 million pounds

British sculptor Henry Moore was the night's top lot. His "Reclining Figure: Festival" soared to 19.1 million pounds compared with pre-sale estimates of 3.5-5.5 million.
Christie's on Tuesday kicked off a fortnight of major London art sales with a bang, hitting or exceeding the most optimistic pre-sale expectations and extending 2011's record-breaking run into the new year.

At its impressionist and modern evening sale, the world's largest auctioneer sold works worth 97.8 million pounds ($155 million), which was toward the top end of estimates.

The Art of the Surreal auction raised an additional 37.2 million pounds ($59 million), well above the valuation range of 19.6-29.1 million pounds, although the total included buyers' premiums whereas pre-sale estimates did not.

According to preliminary figures, Christie's overall sold art worth 135.0 million pounds (slightly under $214 million), topping the high estimate of 127.1 million pounds as the London art world enters a two-week period of auctions that are off to a strong start.

British sculptor Henry Moore was the night's top lot. His "Reclining Figure: Festival" soared to 19.1 million pounds ($30.3 million) compared with pre-sale estimates of 3.5-5.5 million. Christie's said it was an auction record for the artist.

In the surreal section, Christie's also smashed the auction record for Spanish painter Joan Miro when "Painting-Poem" went for 16.8 million pounds ($26.6 million), double its estimate.

Vincent Van Gogh's "Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Remy", from the collection of the late Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, raised 10.1 million pounds ($16 million) versus expectations of 5.0-7.0 million.

"As the crown jewel of her art collection, we are delighted with the price achieved for Van Gogh's 'Vue de l'asile', a profoundly beautiful work from one of creative high points of the artist's career," Marc Porter, Chairman of Christie's Americas, said in a statement.

Juan Gris' "Le livre" went under the hammer for 10.3 million pounds, just short of the low estimate of 12 million.

The strong night launches Christie's into the new year on a positive note after it posted record revenues of 3.6 billion pounds in 2011, an increase of nine percent from 2010. Those figures underlined the ongoing strength of the "blue chip" art market that concentrates on top artists and rare works.

Emerging collectors from mainland China have been a driving force, and experts also believe investors are considering art as an alternative to stocks, bonds and currencies given the strength of the market in the last two years.

Rival Sotheby's holds its equivalent auction on Wednesday evening, and the two companies stage a second series of post-war and contemporary sales the following week.

Combined, the auctioneers are offering art worth in excess of 500 million pounds (roughly $800 million).

<img alt="Joan Miro's 'Painting-Poem'.
Zinemaldia will dedicate a retrospective to France's Georges Franju

Georges Franju was an enormously influential figure in French film culture. In 1936 he founded the Cinémathèque Française with Henri Langlois.
French filmmaker Georges Franju is to be the subject of one the retrospectives programmed for the 60th San Sebastian Festival to take place from 21-29 September 2012.

Georges Franju (12-4-1912 / 5-11-1987) was an enormously influential figure in French film culture. In 1936 he founded the Cinémathèque Française with Henri Langlois. His career as a director began in 1949 with documentaries, a field to which he contributed some of the greatest titles ever in the genre.

His early works - Le Sang des bêtes, Hôtel des Invalides and En passant par la Lorraine - already demonstrated his particular talent for filming reality from unexpected angles, a trait leading in these testimonial films to a sensitivity akin to surrealism and expressionism.

Franju's obsession with putting his finger on the inexpressible poetry of things through his lens stayed with him as he moved on to feature films with La Tête contre les murs (Head Against the Wall,1958), followed by Les Yeux sans visage (Eyes Without a Face,1959), considered to be a masterpiece of fantasy film. His fascination with popular culture, with the feuilleton soap-operas and silent film serials, is clearly visible in movies like Pleins feux sur l’assassin (1960), Judex (1963) and Nuits rouges (1974), true exercises in style striving to recover the innocence of those old narrations of intrigue and mystery in an obvious vindication of film as visual, narrative pleasure.

But Franju was also known for his skilful adaptations of classic literary works on which he unfailingly left his personal stamp: François Mauriac (Thérèse Desqueyroux / Therese, 1962), Émile Zola (La faute de l’Abbé Mouret / The Demise of Father Mouret, 1970), Joseph Conrad (La Ligne d’ombre, 1973) and Jean Cocteau (Thomas l’imposteur / Thomas the Imposter, 1964). Today unjustly forgotten, Franju's work enjoyed great critical acclaim in its time and earned him the admiration of the young filmmakers of the nouvelle vague.

The cycle programmed by the San Sebastian Festival will permit us to recover Franju’s films, precisely in the year he would have turned 100.

To celebrate this cycle, co-produced with the Filmoteca Española, a book will also be published, coordinated by Quim Casas and Ana Cristina Iriarte.

<img alt="Les Yeux sans visage by Georges Franju.
The competition seeks to select the image of its 60th edition. With this initiative, the Festival seeks to encourage creativity and participation and to foster greater reach of the event.

The competition is open to all designers who wish to present their proposals and the public will vote for their favorite posters. A jury will choose the winner from the posters to receive most votes and prizes will be drawn among voters of the winning proposals.

Participants can submit posters for the 60th edition in the following categories: Official, New Directors, Zabaltegi and Horizontes. Participants are free to submit posters for as many sections as they wish. They can also submit as many posters as they wish for each section.

As well as being open, another important new feature is that the competition will take place online for the first time. A specific site has therefore been created within the official Festival website, permitting participation in and organization of the competition.
