Athletic Bilbao crashed out of the King's Cup on Wednesday night (11th November) after a 2-2 home draw with second division Rayo Vallecano meant they lost the two leg tie 4-2 on aggregate.
2008 King's Cup beaten finalists Athletic Bilbao, were aiming to overturn a two goal deficit when they hosted second division Rayo Vallecano in the second leg of their last-32 clash on Wednesday.
After an impressive first leg performance put them in control of the tie - despite the quality of the opposition - Rayo Vallecano were looking for more of the same when the visited the San Marnes stadium.
A quiet first half saw both sides trade attacks with limited success until the hosts took the lead four minutes before halftime.
Susaeta made a spirited attack down the right, evading several tackles before chipping his cross into the box.
Fernando Llorente struggled to get a clean shot but did enough to send a bobbling header into the back of the net to give Athletic a 1-0 lead.
It was a start, but the hosts still trailed by one goal overall and Vallecano were unlikely to give up easily.
Athletic seemed to be gaining the upper hand midway through the second half, and a corner put more pressure on the visitors.
But as the hosts failed to take advantage of their opportunity, some superb defence saw the ball whisked away downfield for Martinez Cervera Angel to skip through the defence and launch an audacious volley towards the goal.
Armando had no chance as the ball swooped into the back of the net to take the score to 1-1.
Barely a minute later, Athletic were ahead once more. Distracted defending at a free kick gave Aquinaga Javi Martinez a clear header which he duly converted for a 2-1 scoreline, to re-ignite the hosts hopes of progressing in the competition.
With little more than ten minutes remaining, Vallecano pulled level once more when Eduard Albacar hammered home a free kick from the spot.
The visitors had a late chance to steal the win, but the shot from Quero was saved and the score remained 2-2, giving the second division side a 4-2 aggregate win as they progress to the final 16 of the tournament.
