China's capital woke up to orange-tinted skies on Saturday as the strongest sandstorm of the year hit the northern part of the country. In the heart of Beijing, at Tiananmen Square, clouds of orange dust could be seen blowing. Tourists and visitors photographing the iconic portrait of Mao Zedong wore face masks to protect their lungs from the dust.



The Israeli air force fired several missiles at six targets in southern Gaza early on Friday in response to a rocket attack on southern Israel that killed a Thai man a day earlier. The military identified the targets as three weapons-smuggling tunnels; two other tunnels that militants were digging to infiltrate into Israel; and a purported weapons workshop.

The cyclone, which brought winds of up to 175 km/h, led to the evacuation of 10,000 of the island's inhabitants particulary in the north where damage to buildings and crops also caused floods.

The actor has temporarily moved to the island, devastated by earthquake in January, where he will remain until April.

Thousands of red-shirted anti-government protesters massed on Monday by a military base in Bangkok where the premier has his temporary headquarters, as he resisted their demands for fresh elections. The supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by the military in 2006, say he must dissolve parliament or face mass street demonstrations led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).
